The immune system is the system that looks after an organism, such as our human body, from invasion by viruses, bacteria, parasites, germs, toxins and all types of pathogen microorganisms.

Our immune system helps us to stay healthy by preventing infection to contaminate our body. Let just say that our immune system allows us to stay alive. The minute the immune system stops working properly or is overload, we become sick and can even die.
The human body is an ideal ground for many germs and they sure would like to get inside and attack the body. It is the immune system job to keep these germs out. But if they do manage to get in, it is also the immune system duty to look for and destroy the attackers.

The first barrier these invaders encounter is the skin, which offers a great guard for the body. The skin is not easy to go through and produces an array of substances that are hazardous to the germs. Cavities such as the eyes, the mouth and the nose, which appear easy to invade possess some defence too. They are protected by fluids that are able to capture mean invaders.

As you can see, immune systems are always busy and on the lookout for pathogens that are trying to heart our body. It's a difficult task because the first thing the immune system has to do is to recognize and keep in mind millions of different enemies.

Then, it must produce the right defence like secretions and cells to match up with and wipe out each enemy. This is done with the assistance of a complex communication network. Millions of organized cells get together and exchange information back and forth. As soon as the immune cells receive the alert, they start creating powerful chemicals. But the key to a healthy immune system is the fantastic ability to distinguish the body' s own cells and the foreign cells.

This is critical since without this ability the immune system can not have a clue of which organisms to assault or not. This is done with the assistance of "marker molecules". When the immune system defenders meet organisms transporting markers that say "foreign", they directly launch an attack. The faster the response the better they can get rid of the germs.

This website was built with the purpose to give information that could help the reader to get at least a glimpse of the density and the extraordinary system working non stop for us, and that we do not always are aware of. By learning about our immune system it will help you to be healthier and live longer.
